Variety of abilities being learnt at gold rank for units is much lowered (it's like always critical now, used to be a lot of different things in aow 3). The variety of buff / debuff that units & spells can inflict is lowered It is simplified on some aspects, and complexified on others. Meanwhile in AoW 4 I feel you can do crazy stuff with tomes and units, and enjoy heck of it - without real "depth" but instead you have "infinite" amount of choices how to execute your crazy strategies. AoW 3 feels to me (after 8 hours lol) more "pure and raw", hence maybe unforgiving. But I don't really know if its mechanics are simplified or upgraded from AoW 3 (or both).
